Art and Design

At Thurcroft Junior Academy, we pride ourselves on delivering a high-quality art and design programme that is engaging, inspiring and challenging. With art and design being taught in this way, it allows children to explore their confidence, creativity and imagination, whilst incorporating the strategies and techniques applied by a range of famous artists throughout the years they are with us. During the children’s time at Thurcroft Junior Academy, they will study a range of different artists, investigating their history and how these link, or are still instilled within other artists learning in the modern day. Children will be able to identify the progression within their skills and how these can be applied and adapted each year allowing for high quality art outcomes to be produced.

EYFS

The children’s journey will start in FS1 through the 'Expressive Arts and Design' strand of the EYFS curriculum. Here they begin to explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. The children will be encouraged to communicate effectively when they share their creations and explain the processes that they have used. Materials will be accessible daily (through continuous provision) allowing the children to develop and explore their ideas and to be imaginative and expressive

The National Curriculum for Art states that by the end of Key Stage 2 children should be able to:

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:

  • To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • About great artists, architects and designers in history

KS2 Overview for Art

Within our foundations unit, the children are regularly exposed the fundamental skills of art and design, enabling the children to develop their artistic and cultural awareness, which supports their imagination and creativity. The children are encouraged to explore the extensive range of activities available, allowing them to access rich and vibrant opportunities, which draw upon real life experiences, enabling them to investigate and explore the world around them.

Artist Study

Throughout the year, children will study different artists in detail. We try to link the artist to the history, geography or science learning where possible and have introduced local artists to study. The children will learn about the life and career of the artist, study the artist’s work, explore the materials and techniques used by the artist and create their own piece of artwork inspired by the artist.

Children will learn to critique both their own work and the work of others, and to describe similarities and differences between the different practices and disciplines that they have studied. The key knowledge, skills and vocabulary of each study builds progressively across each year group, therefore allowing children to build on prior learning and make links across studies.
